Fishing tackle hire

We hire out tackle for the heavier styles of sea fishing at NOK 900 per person per week, including rod, reel and fresh line. Reliability matters when a dream fish takes. A rough drag or worn line has no place in the setup. Even guests who already own reasonable tackle may prefer to leave it at home and use ours. Please tell us at least a month ahead if you would like rental equipment, so we can plan line replacement and preparation.

Our published rental setup pairs right- or left-hand-wind Maxel Transformer F60 reels with our Camp Halibut Jigging XH rods and 0.28 mm Whiplash braid. The line is rated above 100 lb and we value its abrasion resistance. Every rod and line is checked and pull-tested before being issued to a new guest.

We developed our own rods with American Tackle because the rods available did not give us exactly what we wanted for halibut. Two models were launched in 2022: one for fishing natural baitfish and one for working soft-plastic jigs. Both bend deeply under load, bringing the effort closer to your body and giving useful lifting power. Their actions are quite different.

The jigging model is faster and more sensitive. It transmits the lure’s swimming action and responds quickly when you set the hook. It also works well with natural baitfish, making it the more versatile model and our choice for the rental fleet.

The baitfish model asks a little more of the angler. It has a slow, deep action with a powerful lower section. We have lifted 20 kg with these blanks and felt they still had plenty in reserve. For heavy vertical fishing—even our hypothetical choice for a Greenland shark approaching 1,000 kg—this is the action we would choose. It is less sensitive and you need to wind down, load the rod deeply and then set the hook from that position. With natural baitfish, there is time to prepare. The same slow action is ideal when using circle hooks, which are set by winding into steady pressure.

The camp tackle shop

Our shop carries the consumables you need for the fishing here. We stock the lures, hooks and other tackle we use ourselves, rather than every possible model. Ask ahead if there is a particular item you want. If you are happy to follow our tackle recommendations, the essentials are available at camp. We keep prices competitive: helping guests catch fish matters more to us than maximising shop margins.
