To be honest, saithe fishing around Sørøya does not match the enormous shoals found around the southern tip of the Lofoten Islands and Røst. It is the one species for which we do not claim to be the best destination. We do regularly catch fish of 10–15 kg, and a good shoal can provide tremendous action.
Anglers who put in the effort have a good chance of catching plenty of large saithe. Storskalltaren offers excellent fishing and often a high average weight. We also regularly find big shoals a few nautical miles west of camp, between Breigrunnen and Runningen, as well as at several other seasonal marks.
Saithe are a brilliant complement to fishing for large cod and halibut. Fast jigging with relatively light tackle is especially enjoyable: big saithe deliver savage takes and blistering first runs.
The season gets properly under way in late June or July and generally improves into autumn.
Fish around 12–15 kg are fairly common. The camp record in the guide is an unweighed fish estimated at around 18 kg, measuring 128 cm, caught close to camp.
